Promenade des Anglais sur la Côte d'Azur
The Promenade des Anglais in Nice is 7 km long. It is a popular place for cyclists, to practice rollerblading and to walk with the family while enjoying the seafront, the many palm trees and kiosks with a view of the azure blue sea of the Baie des Anges. A few tourist sites line the route, notably the Parc Phoenix and the Hotel Negresco. Visitors can enjoy a snack with drinks in the many restaurants, bars and ice cream parlors, easily accessible from the Promenade des Anglais. Nice's annual carnival with its traditional multicolored parades takes place along the Promenade des Anglais.
In 2015, the city of Nice presented the Promenade des Anglais as a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status. If accepted, it would become the first UNESCO site in the Alpes-Maritimes.
Why Promenade des Anglais?
This name comes from the fact that from the 19th century, the English made the Baie des Anges their favorite place for winter holidays. The Promenade des Anglais has been shaped over the years and the villas have been replaced by palaces, hotels and casinos or sometimes residential buildings. For example, the Villa Masséna has become the Masséna Museum. You can admire the facades classified as historical monuments such as that of the Negresco or that of the Mediterranean Palace.
Outdoor works of art and monuments
You will discover works of art and emblematic monuments such as the Blue Chair of Sab, the Statue of Liberty of Nice, the Centenary monument, the giant sundial of the Rauba Capéu quay, the war memorial in memory of the people of Nice who fell during the 14-18 war. Statue of Liberty, signed by the sculptor Auguste Bartholdi measures 1.35 meters. It was inaugurated in 2014, on the Promenade des Anglais. Monument of the Centenary, of the meeting of Nice in France, of André-Joseph Allar was inaugurated on March 4, 1896 in the Albert-I garden. It celebrates the centenary of the attachment of Nice to France, in 1793.
