Sainte-Agnès, the highest village perched on the Côte-d'Azur

A medieval village full of history

Thanks to its dominant position, Sainte-Agnès has long been a major defensive site. The village has a military fort, built in the 20th century as part of the Maginot line, testifies to its strategic importance. It can be visited and offers an exceptional panorama of the Bay of Menton and Italian Riviera.

Charming alleys

Stroll through the cobbled alleys and observe the stone houses, discover the flowery facades with timeless charm in the heart of the village. The church of Saint-Sébastien, dating from the 15th century, deserves a stop for its typical architecture and soothing atmosphere.

What to do in Sainte-Agnès?

1) Visit the Sainte-Agnès fort

The military fort, dug into the rock, is part of the fortifications of the Maginot line. The guided tour will allow you to immerse yourself in military history and admire breathtaking views of the sea.

2) Stroll through the mediaeval garden

This hanging garden offers a journey through time with its medicinal and aromatic plants typical of the Middle Ages. From its terraces, the view of the Mediterranean is breathtaking.

How to get there?

Sainte-Agnès is located less than 15km from Menton. You can go there:

  • By car: from Menton, take the winding road that goes up to the village.

  • By bus: local lines provide the connection from Menton.

  • On foot: for the more sporty, a hike from Menton allows you to reach Sainte-Agnès in about 2 hours on foot.

Between its historical heritage, its breathtaking panoramas and its peaceful atmosphere, Sainte-Agnès is a little-known pearl of the Côte d'Azur. Ideal for an authentic getaway, this perched village promises you a trip out of time, in the heart of Provencal traditions.

Discovering the surroundings

Let yourself be embarked by the surrounding villages, each with their unique character and attractions. Some suggestions to explore in the neighbourhood:

Menton (10km)

Menton is the closest city to Saint-Agnès, famous for its mild climate, lush gardens and picturesque old town. You will discover the Jardin Serre de la Madone and the Jardin de la Villa Maria Serena, ideal for nature lovers.

Roquebrune-Cap-Martin

On the border between France and Italy, it is a mediaeval village and one of the major points of interest, it offers spectacular views of the coast.

Blausasc (25km)

Blausasc is a picturesque village with panoramic views of the Paillon Valley and the Mediterranean Sea. It has a rich history with remains dating from Roman times.

La Turbie (20 km)

La Turbie is a perched village known for its monument the Trophée d'Auguste, an impressive ancient monument. It also offers a beautiful view of Monaco and the Mediterranean. The city is charming with its narrow alleys, colourful houses and hanging gardens.
