History of Cap Ferrat

Cap Ferrat has become a very popular destination, with its arid and rocky lands, Cap Ferrat initially housed only a few small houses of fishermen and farmers grouped around the church and the port under the name of the hamlet Saint-Jean and was part of the town of Villefranche-sur-Mer.

Growing tourism

In the 1900s, winter tourism will developed on the Côte d'Azur, thanks to its pleasant climate, the city attracts wealthy foreign families such as the English or the Russians who will make it a famous destination.

La Chapelle Saint-Hospice

Listed as a Historic Monument since 1929, it was renovated by Charles Emmanuel II, Duke of Savoy, then in the 18th century it was enlarged and fitted with an altar.

Saint John the Baptist Church

A church dating from the 11th century. Very simple and charming. Two enlargements took place during the 19th century and in 1846 the presbytery was built.

The old port and the marina

It is around the port, activities related to fishing, that Saint-Jean will develop. There are shops, restaurants, Charlin Chaplin performance hall and the Seashell Museum. In 1972 the new Port de Plaisance was inaugurated, and could accommodate 560 boats, including 400 in private berths.

The Jean-Cap-Ferrat museums

The Belle-Epoque gave way to very beautiful architectural remains, such as the Villa de la Baronne Ephrussi de Rothschild, which has now become one of the most visited museums on the Côte d'Azur.

Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild

Listed as a Historic Monument since 1996. Inspired by the Italian Renaissance, the palace brings together all styles and periods with strong Lombard, Venetian and Spanish influences. Surrounded by nine themed gardens and overlooks the bays of Villefrance-sur-mer and Beaulieu-sur-mer.

Shell Museum

7,000 shells including more than 400 world records and the most important Mediterranean collection visible to date, as well as an exceptional exotic collection. 6 minutes of film to start the visit, followed by the discovery of 33 showcases including the observation of micro-shells using binoculars.
