Out And About In The Albera Massif mountains
The Albera Massif is a mountain range that forms the eastern part of the Pyrenees between France and Spain. Its highest peak is the Puig Neulós, with an elevation of 1,256 metres. Discover here some of the best and most beautiful walks during your stay in this part of southern France.
Hiking in the Albera Massif
The Albera mountains were once heavily populated as evidenced by the remains of two dolmens (a megalithic tomb with a large flat stone laid on upright ones) close to Valmy castle. The landcsape of the mountains allows a wide choice of hikes. Whether on foot or by mountain bike, experienced walkers or for a simple family walk, there are great trails with exceptional views over land and sea and the entire Côte Vermeille.
La Tour de la Massane rises to 793m with a magnificent view over the whole coast. A hike where you can experience the landcsape of the Pyrenees Orientales with the sea on one side and the mountains on the other. Start your hike early in the morning to take advantage of the cooler temperatures.
The Madeloc Tower is easier to access - the round trip taking about 60 minutes. Perched at 650m, it is accessible for families with children with a large part of the walk shaded.
Mediterranean climate
The foothills of the massif are covered with Mediterranean vegetation characterized by the ‘maquis’ (Mediterranean scrub) including cistus and gorse. Apart from olive trees, two main species populate the wooded areas of the region: evergreen oak and cork oak
Seaside resorts
Collioure, Port-vendres, Banyuls-sur-mer are some of the beautiful coastal towns in the Pyrenees-Orientales region.
