Le Cirque de Gavarnie-Gèdre - a trail for family hikes
On vacation in the Hautes Pyrénées, the Cirque de Gavarnie-Gèdre-Gèdre is a must. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is located in the heart of the Pyrenees National Park. The highest point is at 3000m. Moreover you will see one of the highest waterfalls in Europe: 427m high.
To start, park in the parking lot in the village of Gavarnie. Parking is 5 euros per day. Then just follow the path. You cross part of the village with its craft shops and local products then arrive at a dirt road that runs along a river. The sound of water and the magnificence of the river accompany you throughout.
After about an hour's walk, you are in the heart of the trail, welcomed by the Hotel du cirque, which is also a café-restaurant.
A luxourious breakfast with sublime views.
Then several choices of hikes are available to you. You can approach the big waterfall, go to the foot of the other waterfalls, meander along the river or climb the ridges. And at the end of the day you can stop again at the edge of the water, at a café for a snack at the end of the hike. The blueberry pie is a local specialty not to be missed.
