Hérault, three places to visit
Grande Conque beach
The Hérault has a pretty coastline with long sandy beaches. Grande Conque beach is located in Agde. It is an extraordinary beach that is nicknamed "The black pearl of the Mediterranean". Crescent-shaped, at the foot of volcanic cliffs, its sand is gray and black. This landscape is the imprint of the region's marine volcanic activity over 750,000 years ago. If you look closely at the soil in the cliffs, you'll find solidified lava flows, slag and vitrified sediment.
The gorges of the Hérault
The Hérault river has its source at Mont Aigoual in the Cévennes. After crossing the west of the Gard, it traverses the Hérault department from north to south to throw itself into the Mediterranean Sea at Grau d'Agde. Between the two are the Herault gorges. You can swim or take a canoe trip from Pont du Diable between Aniane and Saint-Jean de Fos. The bridge dates from the 11th century. It is classified as World Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO under the Trail of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle in France. For more information on canoe rental: http://www.canoe-pont-du-diable.com/
