Discover the Poitou-Charente region of France

Charente-Maritime is a popular tourist destination for its beaches, islands and historic towns. But did you know that the surroundings of this department also offer treasures to discover? Here are some ideas for exploring the regions around Charente-Maritime, each with its own charm and unique activities.

Poitou-Charentes, between history and tradition

The Charente department, similar to Charente-Maritime, is a destination in its own right. The city of Angoulème, capital of comics, one of the largest comics festivals in the world. You will also discover Cognac, another important town in the department, famous for its eponymous brandy production. You can visit renowned distilleries like Hennessy or Rémy Martin to learn more about the Cognac making process and even taste a few samples.

The capital of wine: Bordeaux and Gironde

To the south of Charente-Maritime is Gironde, dominated by the city of Bordeaux, one of the world capitals of wine. Bordeaux is a vibrant city with remarkable architecture, including its historic center listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can stroll around the Place de la Bourse, with its famous water mirror, and visit museums such as the Musée d'Aquitaine. Limousin, tranquility and nature

To the east of Charente you will find Limousin, a region known for its breathtaking natural landscapes. The city of Limoges, famous for its porcelain, offers porcelain-making tours and museums dedicated to this delicate art. You can also discover local crafts, including enamels and leather work.

Millevaches Regional Natural Park: On foot or by bike, in the air or on the water, the territory of the Millevaches Regional Natural Park in Limousin offers a wide choice of natural heritage. Vendée, the beach and Puy du Fou

Vendée known for its beaches and seaside resorts. Les Sables d'Olonne, starting point of the Vendée Globe, a popular resort with a large beach, restaurants and shops.

The Vendée is also home to the Puy du Fou, voted the best amusement park in the world, the Puy du Fou offers a multitude of grandiose shows on themes ranging from the Vikings to the French Revolution. It’s a must-do experience for families and history buffs.

The surrounding Charente-Maritime region offers a wide variety of experiences, from cultural visits in Bordeaux to outdoor adventures in Limousin.
