The Sainte-Baume massif

The Sainte-Baume massif, located in Provence, is a remarkable geological formation. This limestone massif, culminating at 1,148 meters, is covered with dense forests and is home to a rich and varied biodiversity. The hiking trails that crisscross the region allow you to discover grandiose and preserved landscapes.

The Sainte-Baume cave

Perched at an altitude of 669 meters, the Sainte-Baume cave is nestled in the heart of this thousand-year-old forest. Access to the cave is via a steep path, used by pilgrims for generations. Once arrived, the visitor will be lulled by a mystical atmosphere of the place, with its imposing rock walls and its natural opening overlooking the valley.

History and legend of the cave

The Sainte-Baume cave is best known for the legend of Mary Magdalene. According to Christian tradition, Mary Magdalene, after the resurrection of Jesus, came to take refuge in this cave where she spent the last thirty years of her life as a hermit. This story has made the cave an important place of pilgrimage since the Middle Ages.

The sanctuary

Inside the cave, a sanctuary has been set up to allow pilgrims to meditate. Statues, votive offerings and altars bear witness to the devotion of visitors throughout the centuries. The Dominican friars, guardians of the sanctuary, provide a spiritual presence and offer religious services for pilgrims.

The forest of Sainte-Baume

The forest surrounding the Sainte-Baume cave is a place conducive to meditation and contemplation. The century-old trees and the tranquility of the place invite you to relax and recharge your batteries. The marked trails allow walks in the countryside, far from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
