Dinan, medieval pearl in the heart of Brittany

Dinan, located about 30 km from Saint-Malo, is one of the most beautiful medieval cities in Brittany. With its cobbled streets, two-bedroom houses and well-preserved ramparts, Dinan offers a journey through time that will seduce lovers of history and authentic charm. Medieval history

Dinan is a city rich in history, its medieval architecture is well preserved, including its ramparts: Erected in the 13th and 14th centuries, the ramparts of Dinan extend for nearly 3 km and offer a breathtaking view of the city and the Rance valley. A walk on these fortifications is a must.

The Castle of Dinan: This 14th century castle, which is an integral part of the ramparts, now houses the city's museum. You will discover exhibitions on local history and panoramic views from the keep.

The Clock Tower: This one dates from the 15th century, this tower offers a spectacular view of the roofs of the city. Don't miss the opportunity to climb its 158 steps for a breathtaking view.

Picturesque street and Historic Center

Take the opportunity to discover the historic center with its cobbled streets and half-timbered houses:

  • Jerzual Street Rue du Jerzual is an emblematic, steeply sloping street that connects the city center to the port. Bordered by medieval houses, artisan workshops and shops, it is one of the most picturesque streets in Dinan.

  • The Place des Merciers Central square surrounded by half-timbered houses and shops. It is an ideal place to immerse yourself in the medieval atmosphere of the city.

  • The Churches The Saint-Malo Church and the Saint-Sauveur Basilica are two remarkable religious buildings that are worth a visit for their architecture and ornate interiors.

Port of Dinan

Located at the foot of the ramparts, it is a charming place to relax and enjoy.

Walk along the river

From the port of Dinan, you will discover the banks of the Rance that offer a most pleasant walking setting. Along the estuary in the direction of Taden. The village has preserved old houses and a pretty 16th century mansion. You will also have the opportunity to enjoy a cruise along the Rance River: You will discover bucolic landscapes and picturesque villages during this walk.

Events not to be missed around Dinan

The festival of the ramparts: about every two years in July, Dinan celebrates its medieval past with a grandiose festival. On the program: parades, jousts, medieval markets and shows in period costumes.

Weekly markets: The Dinan weekly market, which is held on Thursdays, is the perfect opportunity to discover local products and Breton crafts.

Art Galleries and Artisans' Workshops: The city is known for its many artists and artisans. The galleries and workshops open to the public allow you to discover their work and buy unique souvenirs.
