Basilica and hill of Vézelay
We continue our selection of monuments classified in the World Heritage of UNESCO: the Basilica of Sainte Marie Madeleine de Vézelay. A former 12th century French abbey church. Located in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté and more precisely in Vézelay.
It is the perfect illustration of Romanesque architecture and Romanesque art in general.
A little history
Rebuilt at the end of the 12th century, the choir presents a Gothic style which contributes to the luminosity of the basilica and reinforces its symbolism around the theme of divine light.
During your visit you will progress from a dark space to an increasingly bright space.
The renovation
enovated by Violet-le-Duc from 1840, the basilica is the subject of a classification and appears on the first list of historical monuments. In addition, in 1979 it was included on the Unesco World Heritage List.
Summer solstices
As you enter the abbey, a magnificent astonishing light will offer you a timeless spectacle.
During the summer solstices on 21st June at solar noon and in winter on 21st December at solar noon, the sun enters the basilica through the southern windows to offer an exceptional path of light.
Hill of Vézelay
Vézelay is the star village of Burgundy and has seen many characters who made it famous. Also, the abbey which largely dominates the Burgundy territory at the top of the Hill. Thousands of people each year come to discover this building built on the road to Saint Jacques de Compostela.
You will discover in this beautiful village, the vineyards, literature, art, culture, gastronomy, religion and nature.
"The big mop"
In addition, the village served as the setting for the cult film "The big mop" with Louis de Funès and Bourvil.
Entrance to the basilica is free from sunrise to sunset.
