The etymology of Font Romeu comes from “Font” the Fountain and “Romeu” the pilgrim. Because in fact, built in the 17th century, the Hermitage of Font Romeu is historically a place of pilgrimage and a meeting point for pilgrims leaving for the route to Saint Jacques de Compostela. The Hermitage can be visited and you can admire a work of baroque art.
Later, in 1911, the Société des Chemins de Fer et Hôtels de Montagne built the Grand Hotel on a high point in Font Romeu. In 1914 the mountain palace opened its doors and welcomed wealthy clients who came to recharge their batteries, especially during the summer period.
Emblem of Font Romeu, this hotel is a jewel of art deco. In 1937 Font Romeu inaugurated its first ski lift and thus became a winter sports resort.
