Ideal base for visits to the Dordogne valley with its world famous pre-historic cave paintings, caverns and pre-historic cliff dwellings as well as the romantic medieval châteaux of the Dordogne and the 'Bastide' towns (fortified market towns) which remain largely as they were 600 years ago.
The area surrounding Duras has almost 200 small, independent or cooperative vineyards (72 independent vignerons et 118 cooperated vineyards) over 1800 hectares of vines which welcome visitors most days for wine tasting and purchases. These wines form the appellation 'Côtes de Duras'. Red wines form 65% of the locally produced wines, they are made with le Merlot, le Cabernet Sauvignon, le Cabernet Franc et le Malbec grapes. The white wines are grapes; le Sauvignon, le Sémillon, le Muscadelle, l'Odenc, le Chenin, le Mauzac and l'Ugni Blanc. The area is particularly renowned for its organic wine which constitutes over 20% of the total production.

The Historic towns of Bergerac, Saint-Émilion and Bordeaux, are all less than an hour away and the Atlantic coast with Arcachon and Cap Ferret just an hour and a half.

Night markets from July to end of August;
The night markets are becoming more and more popular. You can always buy food but but it's a nice opportunity to meet people and eat on huge common table.

The T. Family - September 2023
We have had a fabulous time at Villa Baleyssagues. The house itself is beautiful, just as advertised but in reality far much better and exceeded our expectations. We have spend mots days by the pool and in the pool, having experienced great weather, taking full advantage of the equipment and facilities available to us at the Villa. The surroundings and grounds are stunning providing us a relaxing and peaceful . We are very sad to be leaving after a very memorable and enjoyable holiday. We will definitely looking to book an other holiday here as soon as we can.
The B. Party - September 2023
We already came a few years ago. Nothing much has changed within this walls, around Duras or within France. Frédéric as helpful as ever. The perennial aide. We look forward to each visit, availability ( this villa and ours ) depending. Thanks as ever for enabling our visit and to the dedicated team who prepare and clean in preparation. Much appreciated.
The K. family - September 2023
My wife and I, along with our eldest granddaughter, spent a truly memorable week at Maison Baleyssagues. For an introduction to the region of unspoilt bastide towns of upper Lot-et Garonne, eastern Gironde and Dordogne, Villa Baleyssagues provides a superb base. It commands a beautiful panoramic view of the open countryside in all directions, which includes the extraordinary Château de Duras, itself an unmissable example of national, regional and local dedication to conservation of cultural heritage. Celebrated names like Saint Emilion, Bergerac, Sarlat-la-Canéda and Bordeaux, itself, also feature in a list of must-see’s offering a variety of attractions for every taste – and all within manageable reach.
(Speaking of taste, do not miss le Pain de maïs at the boulangerie in Duras. It is to die for, easy to cut into toast-able slices and retains its moistness for a week.) (Frederic will vouch for this.)
We cannot praise the villa without including its Property Manager, Frederic Guiraud, most welcoming and helpful and always available at request on short notice. His welcome pack is the most thoughtful and generous we have ever encountered over many years of villa rentals in France. He has managed to compile a bound guide book featuring excellent introductions and practical visitor information on a multitude of towns and notable sites throughout the region. It obviously reflects considerable work and must be the most comprehensive visitor guide we have experienced anywhere.
As for the villa, itself, it does justice to all the pictures you will have seen in the property listing. We found it impeccably clean and in excellent repair. We thoroughly enjoyed eating outside on the terraces, luxuriating and playing in and by the pool and feasting on the views, especially in the evenings after a busy day of touring. The beautifully tuned piano must also be mentioned for those who enjoy playing on a fine instrument or just gently tinkling for leisurely entertainment.
The K. Family - August 2023
We have been holidaying in this area from over 30 years and without doubt, this is one of the most special places we have stayed in.
We plan to return next summer !
The A. Family - May 2023
We can honestly say that Villa Baleyssagues is the best property that we have stayed in in France. The photographs on the website do not really do the house justice. It is located in a wonderful elevated position, with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.
The house is equipped to a very high standard with an abundance of crockery and cutlery. There were so many lovely touches, with fresh flower arrangements in several rooms and the best welcome pack we have ever had in our seven years of visiting France.
Thanks Frédéric for welcoming us to the Villa and looking after us during our stay. Can you pass on our thanks to the owners for allowing us to stay in their lovely home.
The S. Family - May 2023
We are returning guest since now more than 5 years. We love Villa Baleyssagues and Frédéric !
We love everything in the house and all the different changes/improvement in the house due to new ownership. Pool remain the same with its impressive shape !
The only negative point is that the house is rapidly fully booked !!!
Tim and Clare, London, UK - May 2023
Thank you Nick and Tessa for the most fantastic two weeks in your wonderful house. Frédéric was a star. We relaxed properly for the first time in a long while. Ate delicious food quaffed too much wine and swam all day in your pool. We hope to return one day.
C. Familly, UK - June 2023
We’ve had an amazing two weeks at this gorgeous property.
On arrival we have been overwhelmed by the beauty of the house. It has been lovingly designed to a very high standard and certainly has the “wow” factor on arrival.
Frédéric and the staff were very helpful and made our stay very special.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful place with us.
Russel B. familly, UK - June 2023
The most enjoyable part of France.
The most enjoyable stay in “luxe” villa.
Highlights:
fresh veg from Duras market on Monday.
eating out at Eymet, almost any restaurant will do, but particular favourites are Cour d’Eymet and Château les Vigiers.
watching the red kites hunting over the fields in the evening . The lizards and the geko on the patio.
All in all a memorable experience.
From June 25th to July 9th Mrs F., London UK
Maison Baleyssagues is lovely. It’s as nice as the photos, the beds are super comfortable, the kitchen very well equipped and the pool area and outside terraces are charming, one with wonderful views and sunsets. The property manager is extremely helpful and went above and beyond to help with some issues we had. Thank you! We’ll be back.
Peter and Claire, Hertfordshire, UK
This was our sixth visit to Maison Baleyssagues - it really is a perfect place to stay! The villa was as comfortable and elegant as always with lots of stylish new touches that we enjoyed. There’s everything a family can possibly need from games and books to a wonderful new kitchen to fantastic grounds to walk and play in. The pool in particular was well used as it was so hot during our visit. It's a lovely place to swim and relax. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and offers lots of fun and interesting places to visit with some great restaurants nearby. Particular favourites to eat for us are La Terrasse in Duras and Restaurant Italian Des Arcades in Eymet. The night market in Duras is also well worth a visit to try local wines and food. This was our sixth visit to the villa but it won’t be our last!
A. Familly Edingbrugh, UK
This is a lovely villa. Probably one of the best appointed in which we have ever stayed.
The pool and outdoor areas are just delightful. Our 2 1/2 year old granddaughter enjoyed picking up wonderful plums and playing with the games and toys in the little library.
Adults enjoyed the beautiful view end is sunsets.
How peaceful our surroundings where especially when we are used to the traffic noise of city! Special thanks to Frederick who helped us where we had a little medical emergency.
Tim and Joana, UK
As regular visitors we choose this area for over 30 years. This is without doubt the loveliest property we we ever had. The location and settings are glorious. We loved to sat in every places of the garden and at different times of the day. Loved the relaxing and beautiful pool area enjoyed the tasteful but functional rooms and cooked every night in this well appointed kitchen. All the small touches and details show great level of consideration from the owners. Thank you so much Frederick has been welcoming and helpful it was lovely to come back and we hope to return at least once next year.
Colling family - June 2022
We recently stayed for two weeks at this beautiful house and were overwhelmed by its beauty and setting. The house is spacious and extremely well furnished with everything you could possibly need for a fantastic relaxing break. A lot of care and thought has gone into the decor and furnishings giving a real homely feel. Fresh flowers in the rooms added to the warmth of our welcome by Frederic, the house manager and Elisabeth and Marian had ensured that everything was immaculate.
The town of Duras is close by and we enjoyed the Monday morning markets as well as trips to Bordeaux (by train from Marmande), St Emilion and the wonderful Château de Fayolle where we had an amazing lunch, vineyard tour and wine tasting. This is a beautiful part of France where we have made many happy memories and hope to return one day.
Our thanks to the team at Maison Baleyssagues for making our visit so special.
Worthy of mention is local driver Mark Pope who provided transport for us during our trip. He needs to be pre- booked but will get you where you need to go if you don't want to drive!
Martin Y
A fantastic week at the villa. We were lucky enough to get a last minute booking when travel restrictions were listed. We were slightly anxious about travelling in these times but always felt safe and welcomed be the locals.
We're so pleased we did come!
The villa is very well equipped and Frederic was so informative and helpful.
The massive selling point for us was the gorgeous pool and gardens as well as the stunning setting and amazing views from every angle! We spent many nights eating cheese and drinking wine while watching the sun set and then gazing at the star-rider sky.
This is definitely one of the most beautiful parts of France we've been too.
We enjoyed the local morning's and night's markets in Duras, kayaking down the Dropt river and would recommend visiting local town/villages like Eymet, Villeréal and others mentioned in the guide.
St Emilion is also a family favorite and is a must-visit! We now have a car full of wine!
Thanks for an amazing week! We hope to be back soon.
Carol N, Australia
A wonderful week at Maison Baleyssagues. The house is extremely well set up and equipped.
We enjoyed cooking and eating at all of the dining spots inside and outside.
Some of our party even swam in the pool, though the season was over.
We also enjoyed walks in the surrounding countryside and three terrific day trips. We highly recommend La Table de Catusseau- imaginative and exquisite.
Thanks to Frederic for his excellent support.

Glorious sunshine for us all week.
We've had a lovely time exploring. The children pretended to be Rapunzel at Maison Baleyssagues and had a wonderful day the Lac de Lougratte. I jogged in and out of the grape wines, which was surprisingly exhausting. We all had too many croissants?
Thank you for a terrific week in gorgeous setting.
