A visit to the vineyard is highly recommended including cognac and pinot tasting and shopping for local artisan products. The views of the local countryside are amazing.
Lac Bleu de Guizengeard 15 minutes (13.5 km) by car, the secret blue lakes of Guizengeard are set in a pine and oak forest of the Sud- Charente. You will be amazed by the spectacular turquoise blue lakes that have formed in former clay quarries. This area is ecologically rich and was rehabilitated by conservationists to create a beautiful Discovery Trail, now home to exceptional biodiversity and migratory birds.
It takes 2-3 hours to take the trail and of course an important stop for a picnic lunch.
Aubeterre-sur-Dronne 28 minutes (30.6km) by car, one of France’s Les Plus Beaux Villages; walk around the artisan shops and relax in the pretty main square for a late lunch or a glass of wine.
Visit the 13th century monolithic underground church and take in the beautiful countryside views. For the children, take an afternoon visit to the lovely sandy river beach with a play area and safe swimming, or hire a kayak for a leisurely punt around the river, followed by a dinner in one of the many eateries.
Angoulême 30 minutes (39.8 km), by car, is the capital city of the Charente and offers a fantastic choice of restaurants and shopping.
Take a stroll through the quaint streets in the old town and visit the artisan indoor market. A walk around the old city ramparts is a highlight, providing excellent views of the city and countryside.
Nabinaud 30 minutes (33.1km) by car offers a great day out at La Base de Pleine Nature de Poltrot which offers zipline and aerial adventures. Take a swim in the beautifully cool river, go for a walk in the forest.
Brantôme 60 minutes (73 km) by car, is recognised as a Les Plus Beaux Villages and famous for a monastery which is is partially built in rock with caves to explore. The river running through the town is a great place to take a small river cruise, or if you’re feeling energetic, hire a kayak to traverse the river. There many cafés and restaurants to take in the lovely views or walk around the peaceful quaint streets.
Saint-Émilion 1 hour 7 minutes (81.4km) by car, is one of the most famous and prestigious wine-producing villages of the Bordeaux wine region. Visit one of the many artisan shops and independent wine producers, who offer wine tastings and advice.
Book a tour of one of the vineyards in advance. Enjoy lunch in the historic square or take in the beautiful views from the old ramparts and city walk.

Lee, Anita and girls - July/August 2024
This is the easiest and most satisfying review we've ever written.
Quite simply, Mark and Gary are two of the warmest and thoughtful people we have ever met and they have created the most wonderful home in the perfect rural location that it almost seems too good to be true... but it isn't.
Everything about La Distillerie encourages you to unwind and relax... whether it be the sumptuous and luxurious interior spaces, the pool and adjoining terraces giving shade and privacy or the surrounding woodland and rustle of the leaves on trees in the gentle cooling breeze.
Early mornings and evenings were our particular favourite as we would just sit and listen to the silence whilst enjoying an espresso or cold Pineau. It was truly idyllic.
Our daughters, aged 12 and 14 years old, were so happy playing in the pool for hours or relaxing on the terraces and in their own private snug that has been beautifully created.
We would love to keep La Distillerie as our own little secret and not share it with anybody, but of course we can't. So regretfully we have to tell anybody that asks that we have found the perfect destination with the perfect hosts.
C'est magnifique.

Thank goodness we found this last minute! What a find...
We were the first renters in this lovely house - thank you for a wonderful week. It's like staying in a chic boutique hotel, but you have the whole place to yourself ! Everything is fabulous, the interior design and the garden and pool area. We found it hard to drag ourselves away from the pool and the little ones loved the designated play area. And we are now professional boules players... and pastis drinkers. Thanks to Mark and Gary for making our week so special.
