Guide to Angouleme

Our guide to the Charente capital. Perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Charente, here are the highlights of Angoulême.

The capital of Charente is Angoulême which is perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking its vast Charente domain and urban sprawl. Its fortifications and ramparts are a visible legacy of its rich and tumultuous history. To visit Angoulême, walk up the hill towards the city center and park in the underground car park, then wander through the old town with its winding streets of art galleries and restaurants, and huge murals. The Circuit des Remparts is a classic car race that takes place in the narrow streets every year and is well worth a visit!

Among the sites to see in Angoulême, you can visit the Saint-Pierre d'Angoulême cathedral dating from the 12th century. The Angoulême museum presents objects from the deep and diversified history of the city. There is a comic strip museum and Les Bateaux Rouges for a boat trip along the Charente.

Not to be missed... Cathedral of Saint-Pierre.

Cathedral of Saint-Peter

Saint-Pierre de Montpellier Cathedral is the Catholic cathedral of Montpellier in Hérault. Located in the crest, in the heart of the old town, it is the most important Gothic-style monument in the city of Montpellier, the largest church in the former Languedoc-Roussillon region and an emblematic example of "cathedral-fortress".

This church was erected as a cathedral in 1536, when the episcopal siege was transferred from Maguelone to Montpellier.

Not to be missed at the heart of the church: the porch, an imposing canopy supported by huge circular piles 4.55 m in diameter which once bore the coat of arms of Urban V, a student and teacher in Montpellier, then appointed bishop before being elected pope in Avignon (1362).

Inside, a work by Sébastien Bourdon takes you into the artistic life of Montpellier in the 17th century.

Prices: free entry. Hours: Open Monday to Saturday 9:30 am to 6 pm and Sunday 2 pm to 6 pm.
