Edvard Munch
Edvard Munch, Norwegian painter, was born in 1863. In 1868, Edvard's mother died of tuberculosis and a few years later, his older sister died of the same disease. He was then brought up by his aunt who introduced him to painting. Her religious beliefs became more and more devout, and the family atmosphere became more and more austere.
He was traumatized by the successive deaths or illness in his family: one of his sisters was interned for psychological disorders, pneumonia took his brother at the age of 25.
His traumas were expressed through his painting: "I would no longer paint pictures with people in closed places, reading, or women knitting. They would be people living, breathing and feeling, suffering and loving." - Edvard Munch, Notebooks of the Soul Munch was a precursor of expressionism but did not define himself in a current. His painting reflect the emotion, the feelings of the characters which at the time was innovative: "A landscape conveys a certain impression; if we manage to paint it, we reflect our state of mind and it is this state of mind that counts_ nature is only the means." - Edvard Munch, Notebooks of the Soul
The Musée d'Orsay
In 1810, the museum was then the Palais d'Orsay. In 1871 it was burnt down during the Paris Commune, only ruins remain. In 1900, Victor Laloux built the Gare d'Orsay to accommodate foreign delegations coming for the Universal Exhibition. It was operational until 1950. It then reopened its doors in 1986 as a museum.
