Museum of Photography - Chalon-sur-Saône (5 km);
It is at Chalon-sur-Saône that Nicéphore Niepce, inventor of photography, was born. Chalon has dedicated a museum to him and the art he invented. In a beautiful house along the banks of the Saône, a comprehensive collection of cameras is displayed. Throughout the visit, discover the different photographic techniques used to reproduce reality on paper. There are some wonderful temporary photographic exhibitions held here.
Hospices de Beaune - Beaune (37 km).
Famous for their auction of wines each year in November, the Hospices de Beaune is, with its marvellous varnished coloured tile roof, one of the most famous sites to visit in Burgundy. Apart from its own history which is fascinating, the Hospices de Beaune also houses some very fine paintings with amongst others 'The last Jugement' by Roger van der Weyden, the leader of religious painting in the 15th century.
Château de Couches - Couches (32 km).
Clinging to its rock, the Château de Couches soars up amidst the green and rolling landscape of the vineyards of the 'Côte Chalonnaise'. Access is by a drawbridge that stands as witness to the defensive role that the château had in by-gone days. Today it is possible to visit the chapel, the prison and the square dungeon that goes back to the 12th century.
Château de Cormatin - Cormatin (42 km).
Built in the 17th century on the remains of a 13th century castle, the Château de Cormatin is without a doubt one of the most elegant châteaux in Burgundy. Its truly beautiful gardens, which include a maze, were highly appreciated notably by François Mitterand and Alphonse de Lamartine. In the summer the château holds a festival in its theatre called 'Rendez-vous de Cormatin'.
The Hérisson Falls - Jura (90 km).
Two streams join to make a series of waterfalls, each one more beautiful than the last. 31 falls, some over 60 meters high, go to make up the 'Cascades du Hérisson'. A waymarked footpath of 3.7 km allows you to see them all.
Cluny Abbey - Cluny (56 km).
On the eve of the second millenium Burgundy was a region of high spiritual importance due to Cluny Abbey. This Benedictine abbey, built in the 10th century, was the centre of the religious world and the church was no less than the largest in the Christian world! Destroyed during the Revolution, the abbey lives today only through its impressive remains and an archeological museum that allows visitors to imagine what it was like in its glorious past.
Chalon dans la Rue - Chalon-sur-Saône (5 km).
Each year, during the 3rd weekend in July (from the Thursday evening until Sunday evening), the streets of Chalon-sur-Saône are transformed into the stage of a multitude of live performances (jugglers, plays, concerts, acrobats, circus acts etc.) during the biggest festival of street theatre in France.
Fun Park des Combes - le Creusot (45 km).
Laid out around a disused railway line, the Parc des Combes offers visitors a whole range of activities in a natural setting covering 70 hectares. According to your taste and whim, whether you prefer a spine chillling ride on the big dipper or if you prefer the relaxing roll of an old steam engine, this Park has something for everyone : a summer toboggan run, an aerial runway, a steam train, fairground rides etc.
Green Way - Chalon-sur-Saône (4 km).
From Chalon-sur-Saône to Charnay-les-Macon tens of kilometres of old railway track have been converted into a cycle track. Surrounded by rolling landscapes, alternating between vineyards and forest, this flat (or almost!) Green Way, lends itself perfectly to cycling or rollerblading or simply walking! The track goes through several attractive villages and you can also admire sites such as Cluny and Cormatin from it.
Acrogivry - Givry (15 km).
At Givry, 6 hectares of oak trees are reserved for adventure in the tree tops! More than 18 circuits and 150 aerial games have been created for visitors from young children to really tough adventurers! Those who like a thrill won't be disappointed by the 250 meters aerial runway!
« What a wonderful week ! We were expecting something special but the Chateau far exceeded our expectations. The beautiful house, the facilities, the swimming-pool and the magnificent view of the vineyards were all too much to enjoy in just one week ! We will be looking for another opportunity to return in the near future. As we say in Dutch : We hebben geleefd als god in Frankrijk. Merci beaucoup. » Xantia & Wesel families, The Netherlands
« We had a wonderful week in your fantastic Château de Mercurey and enjoyed all the lovely things you created : all these charming rooms, the garden and swimming-pool. Thank you very much for splendid house in Burgundy. We really do hope to return in the future ! » Mulheim family, Holland
« Thank you for a wonderful week in this unique and splendid Château. It is definitely a superb combination of the ultra-comfortable (and beautiful design) with the typical ambience of rural Burgundy. In this magnificent place, everything you need, you have. A long-lasting memory, and a good lesson for life in the "art de vivre". Au revoir et merci beaucoup. » Roguin family, Israel
« Everything about our stay at the Castle was outstanding. We misjudged the time to get from Paris, but Christophe still waited an additional 2 hours for us to give us a personal tour and welcome (including local wine). The Castle is incredible; luxurious, yet still very comfortable. The location right next to the town makes it ideal to conveniently walk to buy food at the local markets or try some great local restaurants or try some of the very good local wine. I have enthusiastically recommended both the Castle and Christophe to everyone I come in contact with. Thanks again » D & M Kvam, USA
« I just wanted to say what a wonderful two weeks we all had at the Chateau. It is truly a wonderful property in a spectacular location! The appointments were very comfortable and we took full advantage of the pool side table and kitchen by eating several very special meals outside ... of course, featuring the very nice wines of Mercurey. All in all it was perfect .... and I truly hope we can return someday soon. » G Johns, Canada
« Thank you for an amazing week ! What a beautiful chateau and surroundings! Vineyards as far as the eye can see!! Pool amazing and weather fab at the beginning and refreshing at the end!! Perfect!! Thank you enormously! » Hayley & Tom
« Words simply can't express how much we enjoyed our week at your beautiful chateau. We are a family who came together to celebrate my mom's 70th birthday. She is an amazing woman and this was the perfect environment to raise a glass (several glasses, actually !) in her honor. We've made so many memories, had great laughs, told stories, shared meals and just had a magnificent time together. Thank you for creating such a special home and for opening it up to others. » The Robison family, the Harrison family, The Gallaugher family
« This year we hold our second painting holiday for 15 Australians artists at the Château. This was our 8th painting holiday in France and the first time that we had returned to the same Château for a second time. Why ? The facilities are first class, Toma is a superb Chef and a most helpful person. Again we had a very enjoyable time. » T & J Lack, Australia
« Our family of 13 plus 3 babies have had the most amazing holiday in your house. We wanted to say thank you for providing us with a wonderful holiday. It's a two week period that none of us will ever forget :-).We have created so many memories and shared so much fun. Thank you for welcoming us in your beautiful home. Best wishes » Families Jefferson, Lovett, Anderson & Hamper.
« The quality of the restoration and the beautiful interior design make for a lovely stay. We noticed and appreciated the many thoughtful touches that made our stay all the more special. The chateau catered perfectly for the 3 generations of our family.
The location is superb ! We thoroughly enjoyed all this lovely area has to offer, particularly the wineries. Walking through the vineyards each morning to get our baguettes will stay with us for a long time! » Freeman family, Australia
