Location

The property lies in the heart of the old town of Saumur. All amenities on the doorstep.
Saumur lies equidistant between Angers and Tours (both worth a visit) and is approximately 2 hours from Paris.

Saumur is one of the most charming towns in the whole region. Not too big, not too small. You'll find all amenities there and be spoilt with the choice of café bars and restaurants. Numerous cultural events and fetes during the summer. Great views from the famous château. Well-known riding school has annual shows in July.

Within easy driving distance there are châteaux, each with their own style and charm - from the medieval period through the 19th century.

Writers and painters have been inspired by the castles of the Loire, with the Château d'Ussé being one of the most famous as it was the inspiration for Charles Perrault's folk tale of Sleeping Beauty.

Chinon, its castle overlooking the Vienne and the old town make for a lovely day excursion.

The 12th century Royal Abbey of Fontevraud is where Henry II, Eleanor of Aquitaine and their son, Richard the Lionhearted, are buried.

Saumur has a 9-hole golf course and Fontevraud's 18-hole course is in a beautiful location.

Horse riding, canoeing on the Loire, tennis, biking and more are all available close by. Bike and canoe rentals are easy to arrange.

Don't miss the Vegetable Market Sunday mornings in Montsoreau for a taste of an authentic French market. Relax on the terrasse of the local cafés bordering the Loire River while reading La Dame de Montsoreau - Alexander Dumas' celebrated heroine.

The elegant church built in the 12th and 13th centuries in nearby Candes-Saint-Martin is exquisite.

Caen ferry port - 3 hours. Saint-Malo ferry port - 3½ hours. Calais - 5½ hours.

Reviews

« Maison La Douve is a delightful and beautiful property located in the lovely old town of Saumur.
We stayed for a week and could not have asked for a nicer place to stay in.
The property like so many town properties is hidden behind a large door on a quiet street a stones throw from the town centre,
When you go through the big door you step into a magical courtyard and walk up to the front door of this ancient property.
Inside the house is beautifully furnished and decorated from top to bottom and albeit a small kitchen it is equipped with everything you could possibly need for a self catering vacation.
Lovely comfortable beds and amazing showers all complete the comfort of this delightful property.
The owner lives close by and is very friendly, helpful and eager to please but at the same time not in the slightest intrusive.
Many many things to do in and around Saumur to numerous to mention.
Maison La Douve a true gem. Thank you to the owner and Thank you Pure France. »  Cameron and Magy (Shropshire, UK)

« The property was conveniently situated near the town centre (3 minute walk) and the house was full of character and charm. The furnishings, decor and equipment were all high quality and it really felt like we were staying in a home rather than just a house. The courtyard was great to sit in and the top floor bedroom was wonderful. There was plenty to see in the local area including bike rides along the river Loire, châteaux and cave dwellings - this was a great base for our holiday and a wonderful place to come home to at the end of the day. Elisabeth (the owner) was very friendly and helpful. We'd love to come back to Maison La Douve again. »  The Head family - UK

« Beautiful house, wonderful weather, so many interesting places to visit, plus a day cycling along the river and through the Loire Valley. Just perfect. We have enjoyed out holiday so much and are sad it is nearly over, but we have many lovely memories to take home with us.
Very special place that perhaps we will come back to one day. Thank you! »  UK

« We have really enjoyed our stay in this beautiful home. It is in a great location and we have enjoyed sampling many of the local restaurants. Villandry is definitely worth a visit. We’d love to come back some time. »  Gill & David, Horsham

« Maison La Douve is a perfect pied a terre for visiting the Loire Valley. This charming home is lovingly decorated in true French style-contemporary and old side by side in harmony . The kitchen is very well equipped , all the bedrooms simply beautiful (especially the third floor retreat), the bathrooms so unique and luxurious and the courtyard lovely! We appreciated the separate, easy to use laundry facilities as well as the secure parking space. Elisabeth was so helpful and friendly and provided us with lots of information about Saumur and the area. Pure France and Elisabeth gave us a truly wonderful experience. Merci beaucoup. »  Lucy - Orangeville, Canada
