Within easy driving distance there are châteaux, each with their own style and charm - from the medieval period through the 19th century.
Writers and painters have been inspired by the castles of the Loire, with the Château d'Ussé being one of the most famous as it was the inspiration for Charles Perrault's folk tale of Sleeping Beauty.
Chinon, its castle overlooking the Vienne and the old town make for a lovely day excursion.
The 12th century Royal Abbey of Fontevraud is where Henry II, Eleanor of Acquitaine and their son, Richard the Lionhearted, are buried.
Saumur has a 9-hole golf course and Fontevraud's 18-hole course is in a beautiful location.
Horse riding, canoeing on the Loire, tennis, biking and more are all available close-by. Bike and canoe rentals are easy to arrange.
Don't miss the Vegetable Market Sunday mornings in Montsoreau for a taste of an authentic French market. Relax on the terraces of the local cafés bordering the Loire River while reading La Dame de Montsoreau - Alexander Dumas' celebrated heroine.
The elegant church built in the 12th and 13th centuries in nearby Candes-Saint-Martin is exquisite.

« We have had a perfect week staying in this gorgeous home. As much as we loved getting out and about, we have also loved spending lazy days around the pool - it has been quite a challenge to tear ourselves away!
We managed it a few times though & between us the hits were serious cycle trips on quiet country roads, exploring beautiful little towns that are just all over the place, the odd château visit (Chenonceau is a must - get there early) and of course, just being in France.
Thank you for allowing us into your very special home - you are lovely hosts and I hope our paths cross again in the future. Merci beaucoup! » Alison, Kerry & Polly - New Zealand
« Thank you for your hospitality and enabling us to stay in this beautiful house.
During our stay we have very much enjoyed L'abbaye de Fontevraud - so beautiful and wondrous to explore for us and our children, Chinon - such character, even in the rain, the sweet asset wine 'Coteaux du Layon" (c'est magnifique, merci), Azay le Rideau - such a beautiful village, many interesting shops, beautifully presented streets, Mona Pizza in Saumur, despite the name the pizzas (wood-fired oven) were incredible! the Church in Cunault - stunning 14th century, Villandry Château Gardens - the grounds were stunning, Montreuil ville basse - a lovely village, stunning château in the centre and a great pottery studio, the pool and garden! Enjoyed by us all every day. The gite was a home-from-home, a real pleasure to stay in. We hope to return here one day! » Stuart, Kirsty, Archie & Henriette (Cambridgeshire)
« To others who get to enjoy Les Jumelles: this home was like a true little paradise for my husband and I and our two nephews. It is very well appointed with all the amenities you will need. We vacationed during mid-June and found that the house was very fresh with a lovely breeze. A lovely touch was having a freshly cut rose in each bedroom upon our arrival. We found ourselves enjoying the home and grounds so much, we tried to have all our dinners (suppers) here. Our hosts were very friendly yet non-intrusive and provided us with wonderful suggestions in terms of sites to visit while in the area. We were taking a day to go back to Paris and both owners helped provide us a sound plan as to best use our time there for our nephews who had never been. We will recommend this destination to friends and relatives for sure and even try to com back in the not too distant future. Merci.
PS: The shower is great but ask for the trick to turn it on! » Denise, Michel, Jean & François - Canada
« This is our last night staying at Les Jumelles and we are all sad to be leaving your wonderful house and garden. We only have good memories of our stay and you have made us feel extremely relaxed during the last two weeks. The weather has been perfect for lots of fun spent in the swimming-pool and whilst also enjoying your fantastic garden. » Alan, Michelle, Tom, Lauren & Philippe
« Thanks so much for a lovely stay in your gorgeous home! All the very best to you and your family! Warm wishes. » David, Linda, Dylan & Paul
« This is a beautiful home i a stunning part of the world. We have had a wonderful holiday! Merci beaucoup. P.S. Villandry is a must see. » Judy and Bob - Sydney, Australia
« We had a lovely stay in your house, which is like a ‘home from home’. The house is beautifully decorated and French styled, and the ‘jardin‘ with the vibrant roses finished it off in splendor. The region and location is also ideal, being so remote and yet convenient. Unfortunately the weather was against us, which made the house even more important! The swing in the garden was a major hit with our oldest daughter. » G, F, H, S, & M - UK
« Thank you so much for opening up this very special place to us. We have absolutely, completely and totally loved being here. The house is so beautiful and cool and the garden is absolutely amazing. We feel so lucky to have been able to come and rest here. We would definitely love to come back. » Cusiter family
