The Loire Valley is famous for its many châteaux where kings and their courts built an impressive array of stately homes ranging from medieval times through every period and style to the second empire in the mid 19th century.
This area is also known for its wine: Chinon, Bourgeuil or the rich, sweet wine of Coteaux-du-layon or the sparklings of Saumur. Le Cadre Noir, the classical academic riding school is based in Saumur (8 miles away) and gives gala evenings from April to October.
The 'Futureoscope of Poitiers' is only a few hours drive away. So come and enjoy!
You will be able to enjoy all of these activities during your stay at the manor:
Cycling, Fishing, Golf, Horse riding, Tennis, Walking, Water skiing, Wind-surfing, River cruises, Antique fairs, Village festivals, Castles and churches, Wine tasting, Cinemas and outdoor food markets.
You'll want to visit the Saumur castle and the Riding School (Ecole nationale d'equitation), known worldwide for its annual shows during the month of July.
Within easy driving distance there are châteaux, each with their own style and charm - from the medieval period through the 19th century.
Chinon, its castle overlooking the Vienne and the old town make for a lovely day excursion.
The 12th century Royal Abbey of Fontevraud is where Henry II, Eleanor of Acquitaine and their son, Richard the Lionhearted, are buried.
Saumur has a 9-hole golf course and Fontevraud's 18-hole course is in a beautiful location.
Horse riding, canoeing on the Loire, tennis, biking and more are all available close by. Bike and canoe rentals are easy to arrange.
Don't miss the Vegetable Market Sunday mornings in Montsoreau for a taste of an authentic French market. Relax on the terrasse of the local cafés bordering the Loire River while reading La Dame de Montsoreau - Alexander Dumas' celebrated heroine.
The elegant church built in the 12th and 13th centuries in nearby Candes-Saint-Martin is exquisite.
« Our warmest gratitude to you for sharing with us the magic of your fantastic estate & a glimpse of your life. You are the most charming, considerate and generous hosts; you made us feel right at home immediately upon our arrival and so comfortable and welcome throughout the week. Thank you for that !
The Manoir is an absolute treasure, and it has been a true treat for us to learn the story of your shaping it to its present glory. We will particularly treasure the memory of being pampered by you with Bruce's fantastic cooking - asparagus a la Bruce & confit de canard warmly recommended ! - and Steve's delicious deserts. Good food, great atmosphere !
The week has gone too fast & thus we are making plans to return, as such treat just demands an Encore !
With warm thanks, » Britt & Mats, Paula & Anders
« Thanks again for your outstanding hospitality and your completely over the top meals. Wow, what an experience!! As you know we have been to Europe many many times and this stay is right at the top! Thanks again for everything. » G Cervelli, USA
« This is a fabulous property and the hosts were just wonderful. I shall certainly be letting our friends and colleagues know of this magic place. We had a wonderful time, our hosts were very welcoming and we enjoyed their company. » Storey family - Australia
« Steven and Bruce have a fantastic place, and they really went the extra mile to make our stay totally enjoyable. We've been staying at places in France for 20 or so years and we always come back fairly pleased, but perhaps with one or two thoughts about how something or other could have been better, but I think this is the first time we've come back and been unable to think of anything that was less than perfect. » Goodman's family - UK
