Location

The property is situated in open countryside 10 minutes from Riberac, 30 minutes from Périgueux.

Bakery 2 km. Local town of Verteillac, 4 km with bakery, three cafés, four restaurants, butcher and grocery store.

All amenities in Riberac, a charming market town with café bars, restaurants, all shops and lovely market on Friday mornings. Two supermarkets.

There are small beaches on the river Dronne at Saint-Aulaye and Aubeterre where you can swim safely. Aubeterre is one of the show villages of France and has a farmers' market on Sundays where greens, veg, fruit and cheese can be purchased and the local butcher and baker are open until mid-day.

Chalais. About 30 minutes away over the border in the Charente, Chalais features the nearest visitable château which dominates the town. The market here is on Mondays, closing at mid-day.

Brantôme, 30 minutes, a lovely town with excellent retaurants. Canoeing available.

Le Grand lac Jemaye, 15 minutes from the property with sandy beach area, children's play-area, cafés and canoeing.

Périgueux (30 minutes). The département town of the Dordogne is situated on the river Isle. The old quarter is full of boutiques for a spot of retail therapy and it goes without saying cafés and restaurants. There are Roman ruins and several museums. The Cathédrale Saint-Front is very impressive, especially when viewed from the other side of the river. This was rebuilt in 1852 by the architect Abadie, who used the design as the basis for the more famous Sacré Coeur basilica in Paris. The church of Saint-Étienne-de-la-Cité dating from the 12th century is also worthy of your time.

Bergerac (approx. 1 hour). Though everybody has heard of Cyrano the hero of Edmond Rostand's play was inspired by the 17th century philosopher Cyrano de Bergerac whose name had nothing to do with the town. Bergerac is the tobacco capital of France as well as being the centre for the Bergerac 'brand' of very drinkable wines. The old town is very interesting with the riverside port originating from the time Bergerac was a link between the coast and the interior regions of the Auvergne and Limousin.

Saint-Émilion (approx. 1 hour). Very picturesque, giving its name to one of the most famous of the French wine areas. Naturally the main focus is on the wine trade and tours of the Châteaux and wine tasting can be arranged at the local tourist office. There is also another église monolithique to compare with the one at Aubeterre.

Cognac (approx. 1½ hours). Situated on the river Charente and owing its name to a prominent Roman, Cognac is a historic town which evolved and gave its name to one of the world's most famous eau-de-vie. Tours of the distilleries, where you can enter into the spirit of things, can be arranged at the local tourist office. Boat trips can be taken upstream to Angoulême.

Reviews

« Le Malardier is delightful. It is so much more than just a holiday home. Every room makes you want to step inside. The house has been so sympathetically restored and is quite clearly a labour of love. Richard and Gay were also the perfect hosts and couldn't have done more to welcome us. If your'e thinking of booking a week or two at Malardier, do it. You won't be disappointed. »

« We had a truly fantastic family holiday for 6 adults and 4 children in this wonderful house in this stunning location. The house is spacious, imaginative, inviting, well equipped and has everything needed for a break away from it all. We chose to eat outside for every meal and were able to make the most of the different perspectives and views that the house offers. We loved the cooler early mornings watching the cattle and buzzard, the shade of the trees or the pool house in the heat of the day and the breeze in the evenings as we watched the clear constellations above us. The owners, Richard and Gaye, had exactly the right balance of friendliness and attentiveness if needed tempered with discretion about our privacy. We didn't explore the area as much as we had intended because the house provides so much and we really do hope to plan another holiday here in the near future. »

« August 6th 2016, 8:30am and we are off after an amazing two weeks in Le Malardier, a house full of character and so spacious. Thank you Gay and Richard.
Our American friends explored the area but we Brits who do not see the sun as much as them were more than happy to lounge around the pool.
There was everything you could want in the house and the children were delighted with the toys in the attic!
This is a beautiful part of France, the views are spectacular. We found some great restaurants and enjoyed the local culture. Au Revoir. »

« We loved our stay in your beautiful home and the solitude meant that the children and young were able to be as noisy as they liked. We managed Mummy with help from James and Toby. We brought the van to fit all the aids Mummy needs to make life easier. Our home is rambling with stone steps so she is used to being helped around.
We enjoyed the pool and spent most of our time in the pool area. Living outdoors is part of the joy of our visiting France at this time of year. The weather was dry at least and when the sun came out it was an added bonus.
We left Mummy, Pandora, Henry and Emilia to go canoeing from Brantome to Bourdeilles which was lovely and great fun.
There are enough places of interest within half an hour's drive to keep us entertained but enjoyed coming back to Malardier for our afternoon swims.
Thank you for a lovely setting for our holiday. »

« All 7 of us had an amazing time at Richard and Gay's stunning villa. From the pool house to their courtyards to the kitchen, every one of their beautifully restored spaces added something different. Incredibly easy to deal with, they both looked after us from the minute we got in contact with them to the day we (extremely reticently!) left. They went above and beyond, booking us into a local restaurant for our first night, and even doing a light shop so we wouldn't be without provisions when all the shops were shut! The house is surrounded by stunning scenery, with a seeming never ending supply of French villages, towns and monuments to explore. If we came back every year for the rest of our lives we still wouldn't see everything. Huge thanks to both and we will hopefully see you again soon! »
