Location

The property is situated on the outskirts of Thonac, between Montignac (10 minutes) and Sarlat (30 minutes) surrounded by lovely countryside, within a few minutes walk of woodland walks and fishing brooks.

Walking distance into Thonac with grocery and bread shop, restaurants.

10 minutes drive to Montignac with large supermarket and all amenities.

30 minutes to Sarlat-la-Canéda, and 40 minutes to Périgueux.

Sarlat-la-Canéda, is a charming and busy traditional town with all amenities which is the capital of Perigord. Many good restaurants and cafés to discover. Excellent market on Saturday.

Hot air ballooning, various local companies. Micro-lite aircraft, and light aircraft flights available from Domme Sarlat-la-Canéda Airport.

Paintball, very good site near La Roque-Gageac. La Roque-Gageac (approx 25 minutes) is a stunningly beautiful village under the towering cliffs. The village regularly wins France's 'Prettiest Village' competition. Good canoeing centre here.

Competing with La Roque-Gageac in the prettiness stakes is the village of Carennac. Elevated just above the South bank of the river, it is best known for its typical Quercy architecture and Romanesque priory. Further Romanesque art at the Saint-Pierre church in Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne.

Perhaps the most famous of the Dordogne tourist attractions are the cave paintings around Les Eyzies.
There are more pre-historic caves in this area than you could ever visit in a day!

Les Eyzies lies at the heart of an unspoilt area of great natural beauty with rolling hills, tranquil rivers and fascinating cliff and rock formations. It has some of the world's most beautiful caves with outstanding stalactite and stalagmite crystallisations. And the cave-lined Vézère valley has been classified as a heritage site by UNESCO.

The most well-known of all is the cave at Lascaux, Montignac which was discovered in 1940. The paintings date back some 17,000 years.

Reviews

« This beautiful, secluded cottage is in the grounds of a historic house, both of which have been painstakingly restored by our hosts. It contains all you could need for a self-catering holiday, although there is an excellent local restaurant in the village, only five minutes walk away, and others in local villages. The large private swimming pool is an added bonus. We used this as the base for a week's exploration of the Dordogne. Thonac is plum in the middle of the historic / pre-historic area of the Dordogne; the caves of Lascaux, famous for the pre-historic cave paintings, are just down the road, and there are numerous ancient cave settlements nearby. A little further away, you can visit the castle at Castelnaud and its fascinating collection of ancient weaponry. We also ventured as far afield as Perigueux and Rocamadour, carrying out an in-depth investigation of the local cuisine as we went. To cap it all, Caterina and Steve are wonderful welcoming hosts, more than happy to chat about the history of the property and potential outings in the local area, and keen to make sure their guests have everything they need. Highly recommended.
Finally, I would like to thank you and everyone at Pure France for the excellent service you have provided this year and am looking forward to another successful year with you. »  C Krucker

« We spent a lovely week in the garden Cottage. »  John & Chris (UK)

« We had high expectation of this holiday and were not disappointed. The property is a piece of history in an area steeped in the past. From the moment we arrived, greeted by a couple you seemed to have been friends with all your life, the stresses of every day life evaporated. We immediately felt at home and were very quickly making plans for our next visit. The cottage looks picture postcard from the outside and there really is no detail left undone. The inside has its historic charm in place but with all the amenities necessary so that you are not required to live the medieval lifestyle of many some other rural accommodation in France. The rooms are beautifully and tastefully decorated and there are large bathroom and shower facilities (upstairs and down). The private swimming pool is superb and was for our sole use. Its clear waters under pine trees and a blue sky were idyllic. It was difficult to tear my wife from the pool side. The cottage fits perfectly into an area of outstanding beauty where many of the sites we wished to visit were only minutes away. The owners were very welcoming and provided good advice on the places to visit but were not overwhelming so that you could always enjoy complete privacy. We enjoyed every minute of our stay and cannot recommend it more highly. If you want to tour the area to see the 1000 châteaux and the countless prehistoric sites in the area or just chill by the pool, this is the place for you. Thank you for a lovely week. »  C & R
