Holiday rental in Saint-Mézard, Gers, Occitanie

7 bedrooms | 7 bathrooms | sleeps 12

Introduction

An immaculately restored 13th century château set in 42 acres of private grounds.

Beautiful countryside setting with far-reaching, panoramic views.

As featured in THE SUNDAY TIMES TOP 10 HOLIDAYS TO FRANCE 2013; "It’s impossible not to smile in the Gers. At the heart of Gascony, this land is green and gentle, with hills, rivers, armagnac, ducks, arcaded village squares and solid people ambling a couple of hours behind mainstream France. Given the feudal feel, a château fits the frame. Few are more sumptuous than the Château Mézard, near Condom, which sleeps 13. Surrounded by 42 acres, it’s the sort of place ordinary mortals pay to look round, not stay in".

The property dates back to the thirteenth century and has been sympathetically restored throughout to the highest of standards. A fantastic, traditional family home offering living accommodation over two floors with 7 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms.

Two separate driveways lead up the château. Formal garden to the rear and large, lawned garden surround the front, South-facing aspect. Lovely perimiter of wild flowers lead out to grassland and private woodland.

Private, heated pool of 12m x 6m with large, sun-deck with loungers and dining terrace. Sweeping views down the valley.

Numerous terraces for dining / reading relaxing. Charming, main dining terrace lies off the kitchen in a pretty courtyard.

Summer dining room with large dining table adjoins the kitchen and wine store: wonderful ambience with BBQ oven, fully illuminated at night with open doorways to the garden. Great party area.

Ground floor accommodation comprises traditional Gascony kitchen with all modern conveniences. Huge fireplace and breakfast table, two dishwashers and two fridge freezers. Wine store leading to dining terrace and summer dining room.

Utility room and library. Living room with UK TV channels and Wi-Fi internet.

Formal dining room and games room with full-size snooker table. Two entrance halls with separate staircases to the first floor.

Huge master bedroom with dressing room and large ensuite bathroom. Private balcony and private loggia terrace with table and day-bed with wonderful, South-facing views.

Further 6 bedrooms, five with ensuite bathrooms and an additional family bathroom.

Children's 'chill-out' room with bean-bags and TV in the tower.

The village of La Romieu is less than 5 minutes away and has 2 restaurants and bakery and newsagent and grocery store.

All amenities in Condom with restaurants, café bars, supermarkets, traditional markets and shops.

Bordeaux airport 90 minutes and Toulouse airport, 1 hour 45 minutes.

Guardian lives on the estate in a private, independent property for all help, advice and emergencies.

Daily maid service included in the rental rate.

Note of interest; The well-known children's book, 'Curious George' was written here.

Location

The property is located in open countryside, close to the hamlet of Saint-Mézard 15 minutes from Condom, midway between Toulouse and Bordeaux.

The village of La Romieu is less than 5 minutes away and has 2 restaurants and bakery and newsagent and grocery store.

All amenities in Condom with restaurants, café bars, supermarkets, traditional markets and shops.

The spring and summer are full of fairs and fêtes.

Jazz at Marciac in August, the bull fighting at Vic-Fezensac in May and the Country and Western Festival in July at Mirande.

Beautiful bastide villages, Montréal, Larresingle and Fourcès are well worth exploring.

The cathedral at Auch with its world famous stained glass windows and its carved choir stalls, together with Abbeye de Flaran and the Roman villa of Seviac are not to be missed.

Look out for the night markets at Vic-Fezensac, with their stalls and cafés.

The Gascons are warm-hearted people and the owners enjoy good neighbours who are always ready to help their guests. The regional food and wine is excellent with foie gras and confit de canard being the specialities.

This is a beautiful area; surrounded by hills, amid cornfields and vines, at an average height of 82 meters, the region enjoys a micro-climate with lush, luxuriant plants in summer, which even in winter keep most of their foliage thanks to a mild average temperature (about 13°) which is hardly different from that of Biarritz and Marseille in the deep South.

Lectoure (10 km) also has a good selection of shops and restaurants. Golf at Fleurance, 20 minutes drive.

Further restaurants and interesting villages to discover in the immediate locale.

Toulouse airport 50 minutes. Pau and Bordeaux airports 90 minutes.

Saint-Mézard, Gers, Occitanie, France

Gail F. - Newton, MA
Château Mézard really is as lovely as it is depicted on the website! It was a magical place for a holiday. The house and grounds were amazing, the set-up of the house provides great privacy even for a large group. Exploring the surrounding countryside, towns and cities provided the perfect French country get away. Returning to the amazing luxury of the château for a dinner on the terrace or a swim in the pool was the highlight of each day.

Margaret D. - Boston, MA
A fairytale castle set in the stunning hillsides of Saint Mézard - just amazing! Easy to get to from Toulouse, Château Mézard was a perfect home base for exploring the surrounding quaint villages offering the finest in local Gascony food and wine. Sipping Armagnac at sunset and dining by candlelight on one of the many terraces made us feel like royalty!

Château Mézard is a stunning property and certainly set the backdrop for a very memorable family holiday. I can clearly see why you previously spoke so fondly of the château. The holiday was intended as a special celebration with close family. As such we were mixed in our ages and interests but the château provided the perfect setting to cater for all of our interests, from the little ones down to the adults amongst us. The children had tremendous fun in and around the pool. I personally took great pleasure in strolling around the beautiful grounds and taking in some of the breathtaking scenery. Laurent, Didier and Rachel did their upmost to ensure that we had a wonderful time and nothing was too much trouble for them.
